My Maternal 1st. Great German Grandfather, Edward Francis Linderman

Edward Francis Linderman, Winona, Minnesota, 1920

My maternal 1st. great grandfather, Edward Francis Linderman, only grandson of Abraham & Mary (Hammell) Linderman of New York, Illinois, and Minnesota. He was the only child of Mary Linderman. Father unknown. His mother never married. His grandparents, Abraham and Mary Linderman must have told the Census recorders that he was their son not grandson.

[In those days being born out of wedlock was a mortal sin and shameful. Family is family. Love is unconditional.] It taught me that we do not have to be perfect to be loved by God. That is what is called Grace!

Edward Francis Linderman resided at 231 E.Mark Street, Winona, Winona, Minnesota according to the 1875, 1880, 1885, and 1900 U.S. Censuses.

E. F. Linderman worked and lived on the Mississippi River all his life. He worked for the U.S. Lock & Dam in LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and Dubuque, Iowa. He worked as a CLERK/U.S.ENGINEER OFFICE FORCE #16, Rock Island, Illinois.

Married: Gudrun "Gud" Ivara Lund from Namsos, Norway on 11 September 1902 in Winona, Minnesota.

Edward & Gudrun had one son, Harry; and three daughters, Gladys Serena, Irene Mary, and Evelyn "Eppie" Frances Linderman.

Harry; and three sister, Gladys Serena, Irene Mary, and Evelyn Frances Linderman.

705 W. Third Street, Dubuque, Iowa, 1914

They had a home built at 705 W. Third Street, Dubuque, Iowa. My great grandfather oversaw all aspects of the building of their home. It was built so well, that it still stands today in 2021. In the 1925 Iowa State Census he wrote that his home was owned and that he owed 6, 000. on it, and had insurance of 4, 000. on it. Also that he only had an 8th. grade education.

Great Grandpa was in the I.O.O.F. in Dubuque, Iowa. He converted to Jehovah's Witness after the death of his beloved wife, Gudrun "Gud" who was Lutheran. The children were raised as Lutheran and all baptized as Lutheran in the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, at 2025 Jackson Street, in Dubuque, Iowa.

E.F. Linderman worked for the Lock & Dam #15 in Dubuque, Iowa on the Mississippi River.

Edy was cremated and his ashes were scattered around his wife, Gudrun's burial site, the government told his family, that they couldn't scatter his ashes in the Mississippi River where he wanted to be. So his family had him interred beside his wife, and now he does have a footstone.

EDWARD (EDY) FRANCIS LINDERMAN WAS BORN IN WINONA, WINONA COUNTY, MINNESOTA TO MARY LINDERMAN, AND HIS FATHER IS UNKNOWN. EDWARD WORKED FOR THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AS LOCK & DAM OPERATOR ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER IN DUBUQUE,IOWA. HE WAS A JEHOVAH'S WITNESS.

HE WALKED FIVE MILES AROUND HIS AND GUDRUN'S HOME AT 705 WEST THIRD STREET, DUBUQUE, IOWA, EVERYDAY UP UNTIL HE DIED AT THE AGE OF NINETY-THREE. HE WAS A VERY HEALTHY MAN. HE WAS A VERY GOOD, STRICT BUT HUMOROUS MAN. HE NEVER REMARRIED AFTER GUDRUN DIED IN 1924. ACCORDING TO MY MOTHER, HE HAD A LADY FRIEND. HE WAS A GOOD LOOKING GENTLEMAN.

MOTHER TOLD ME THAT HE HAD A RED-HEADED GIRLFRIEND DURING THE "GREAT DEPRESSION ERA", AND THAT HE WAS GOING TO GET MARRIED AGAIN, BUT DIDN'T BECAUSE HE SAID HIS CHILDREN CAME FIRST. HIS CHILDREN WERE HAVING PROBLEMS, AND GLADYS WAS SEPARATED FROM HER ALCOHOLIC HUSBAND, AND MOVED BACK IN WITH HIM AT WEST THIRD STREET. SHE LIVED WITH AND TOOK CARE OF HER FATHER, EDWARD UP UNTIL HE DIED IN 1968.

EDWARD KEPT IMMACULATE RECORDS FOR THE U.S. GOVERNMENT. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE "ODD FELLOWS". ED BECAME A MEMBER OF THE PRAIRIE LODGE #7, IN WINONA, MINNESOTA, ON DECMBER 26, 1900. HE TRANSFERRED HIS MEMBERSHIP TO DUBUQUE'S JULIEN LODGE #12 ON JANUARY 7, 1908, AND SERVED AS NOBLE GRAND IN 1911. HE RECEIVED HIS FIFTY YEAR PIN AND CERTIFICATE ON MARCH 6, 1951, FROM THE JULIEN LODGE#12, IN DUBUQUE, DUBUQUE COUNTY, IOWA.

GREAT-GRANDPA LINDERMAN BEGAN HIS CAREER IN AUGUST 1892, IN LaCROSSE,WISCONSIN, IN THE ROCK ISLAND DISTRICT. THEN, HE WAS MOVED TO THE DUBUQUE SECTION IN 1903-1933. EDY WAS PROMOTED TO DISTRICT INSPECTOR OF HIRED LABOR WORK IN THE ROCK ISLAND DISTRICT. MR. LINDERMAN WAS PLACED IN CHARGE OF THE PROPERTY SECTION OF THE DISTRICT IN 1933, WHERE HE REMAINED UNTIL HE RETIRED ON 29 FEBRUARY 1940.

E.F. LINDERMAN SERVED IN VARIOUS CAPACITIES AND MADE COUNTLESS FRIENDS IN THE OFFICE AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT--IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT HE WAS A PROPERTY MAN. HIS OFFICE WAS AT 400 NINETEENTH STREET, ROCK ISLAND. THE ANNUAL PHYSICAL INVENTORY WAS ONLY ONE EXAMPLE OF THE THOROUGHNESS DISPLAYED BY MR. LINDERMAN IN HIS DUTIES AS HEAD OF THE PROPERTY SECTION.

THE COMPLETION OF SUCH AN UNDERTAKING WOULD ALWAYS FIND EACH ITEM IN THE DISTRICT ACCOUNTED FOR, NOT TO MENTION OUR FOUNTAIN PENS, VANITY MIRRORS, AND A SEAT CUSHION THAT WE BOUGHT OURSELVES AT LEAST TEN YEARS AGO.

AS VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE ROCK ISLAND DISTRICT "25 YEAR CLUB", HE WAS UP UNTIL THIS TIME, THE SENIOR MEMBER IN YEARS OF SERVICE AMONG ALL THE ACTIVE EMPLOYEES CONNECTED WITH THE CLUB. EDWARD FRANCIS LINDERMAN SERVED MORE THAN 42 YEARS WITH THE ROCK ISLAND DISTRICT. PHYSICAL BUILD: TALL, SLENDER, BLUE EYES, AND LIGHT BROWN HAIR. source: great granddaughter, Sally Ann Frederick Johnson, 2021
